Getting ready for any construction project at
your home can seem like a daunting and overwhelming task. But not to worry! Whether
you’ve signed on to replace inefficient windows, install a new roof, or replace
old, worn out siding, we can curb that anxiety by sharing with you everything
you need to know. In this article we will discuss all the preparations and
expectations you’ll need for your next home exterior project.
Your Project Manager
One of your top priorities once you’ve signed
on with GHG Exteriors is to keep up with all your paperwork. The paperwork is
important because it not only outlines in detail the project, but it includes
your project manager’s contact information. Any questions or concerns you might
have leading up to, during, or after your project is completed should be
directed to your project manager only. This will ensure the correct transfer of
information and expedite the construction project in a timely and organized
manner. In the event of an emergency and your project manager is unable to be
reached, refer to your contract for the office number.
Dirt and Debris
It is expected that dirt and debris come with
any construction project, especially roofing and siding. For roofing projects, please
allow not just an exterior roof inspection, but an interior inspection.
Interior inspections are crucial to help identify leaks and ceiling types. If
ceilings are wood, vaulted and not covered with sheetrock, nails could
penetrate the ceiling and measures will need to be taken to prevent this from
happening. Homeowners should also be wary of dirt and debris falling in the
attic. We recommend that you cover any items in your attic or under skylights
that you do not want to get dirty or damaged from dust or falling debris.
Be Flexible
There are many reasons for a delay when
preparing for a construction project; therefore, we cannot guarantee a start
date. There are just too many variables outside our control including the
weather and materials and dumpster deliveries. We take every measure necessary
to ensure that your project isn’t delayed; however, we must ask that you be
flexible if issues hindering the project arise.
Also, we do not recommend you to take off
work or take other financial steps you are not willing to absorb, should there
be any delays. You must take into account these issues when scheduling your
project with your project manager – we too will be flexible for you and try our
best to accommodate your scheduling needs.
Project Day
Often we deliver materials the day prior to
your project start date to avoid materials deliveries delays. In the event we
are not present at the time of delivery for a roofing project, please check the
shingle color and notify your project manager immediately if there are any
discrepancies.
We will need access to your driveway to unload
and load materials, dumpsters, and any other necessary equipment. We ask that
you park your cars, motorcycles, bikes, boats, etc. out of the driveway.
Parking cars in the garage is not recommended in case you’re planning on
running errands or scheduled to be somewhere on your project day or day after.
The driveway might be blocked by materials or dumpsters for some time depending
on the scope of your project.
You’ll also need to be prepared for noise. There
will be constant noise and distractions for one or more days depending on the
size of your project.
Other things to keep in mind on your project
day: Do not loan your tools or equipment to personnel, keep children and pets
away from the work area, remove loose items from walls and shelves, and remove
all items from around your home where debris may fall or which will hinder the crews’
accessibility to the house including outdoor furniture, potted plants,
gardening equipment, etc.
.
During the Project and After Completion
Many power tools are used in the renovation
process, so we recommend that you check your power breakers and freezers each
day to make sure each is operating properly as the power tools or power vents
used during renovation may trip your breaker. If you have a gas home, you should also check heater
vents and flue pipes to make sure the joints have not been disconnected during renovations.
Lastly, please
be advised that we try to clean up as best as possible using high powered
magnets to retrieve any nails and debris during the entire renovation process; however,
some nails and debris may remain after we cleanup. We advise that you double
check your driveway, sidewalk, and yard for nails, tools, and debris that we
may have missed in the cleanup process before you move vehicles or allow
children or pets outside.
Finally, we
sincerely appreciate your choosing our services. Please do not hesitate to call
your project manager with any questions or concerns.
